There you go - colour combo gone BAD

It's a new challenge day today at 7 Kids College Fund Challenge Blog and the theme is pretty straightforward - Non-traditional Christmas Colours. Which generally means no red, green, gold.

Could someone explain, please then how I got really muddled considering and most of my Christmas cards never use traditional colours??? And suddenly, when the CHALLENGE is not use any - shock, panic, horror! And a total mess of a card, of course!!

The image is a Penny Black Slapstick stamp called Winter Swing.

I've been playing with Prismacolor pencils lately, moving on from mineral spirit or baby oil to pretty much using them as Copics, just layering and blending with lighter colours. I have REALLY tried to get my hands on kraft card because I adore the results Dorcas achieves on it but no luck so far, so I'm using a cheap tan slightly textured cardstock from Tesco. Those from States - it's like Target or CostCo.

I very gently sponged all the edges with Memento Rose Bud ink and distressed slightly with distress tool. Did some quick fake stitching with white gel pen.

The golden pearl swirl is made with Viva Pearl pen. I tape acetate on a sheet of swirly rubons, make a swirl, leave it to dry overnight (it makes sense to make more than one) and then cut out. This way, if you go wrong you won't have to smear the card, just wipe the acetate clean and start again :)

I would like to enter this card into following challenges:
Gingerloft (2 weeks) - great outdoors
Scrappy Frogs (3 weeks) - christmas
Crafty Emma - lovely lace
Ellephantastic (2 weeks, 1 entry) - christmas or butterfly
Stamp, Scrap & Doodle - no flowers
Fairy Fun Fridays (2 weeks) - buttons and bows
Delightful Challenges - winter weather
Pals Paper Arts - ribbon or fabric

Thanks for looking and happy crafting!
Hugs
Annika

Wow!! Annika, I think this is utterly adorable, I love the colouring and your use of acetate, the papers are delicious. I'm sure that Crafts U Love have started selling craft card, and it's not too expensive.

Your little girl on the swing is adorable. A beautiful job colouring her in. I love the black backing and the black lace. So unexpected on a Christmas card but really make it pop! And now I have to try the liquid pearls swirls on acetate. That's using the noggin!
Thank you so much for sharing! :o)

It's a beautiful card, Annika! I think your coloring came out really good too.
Can I give you a tip? (how cheeky am I? lol) go over your black lines with a sharp black pencil and it will make your colors pop even more. It's impossible to avoid coloring the lines so I don't worry about it, I just go over them again. But honestly, I think you did AWESOME here!

I have tried coloring on normal colored cardstock but it's been a little disappointing. But I'm not ready to give up yet! I just need to find colored cardstock with plenty of tooth but no pattern, you know what I mean? Normally my cardstock is "woven" look and I don't want my kids faces looking like they walked into a screen door.
Thanks for the shout out. :-)

Love your card and the colouring, I've used colour pencils for years as an art medium and it's so refreshing to note that you have done away with the blending solutions. I hope you don't mind if I give you a pointer to paper. Ordinary card/paper is no good as you cannot build up layers of colour. You need a very smooth watercolour paper I use Fabriano or any ultra smooth watercolour paper is fine, you will then be able to build up many layers of colour pencil to build depth. I love seeing your work it's very inspirational, keep up the good work.

Whaddya mean a mess? Its so cute!!!!!
Great idea with the acetate, cos them pearl pens make a mess if they smudge...ahem...speaking from experience here!

Hi Annika, fist of all I really want so give you a big hug and a thank you for your lovely comments on my blog!! I really appraciate them soooo much!! Now am I getting the impression you're not happy with this card?? How come?? I think its lovely and please explain how on earth do you get those pearls so perfectly round and shaped out of that Viva pen. Somehow I alway manage to ruin my card with them. I squeeze to hard, let go and the tube sucks is back up, by now I'm afraid to use the thing LOL !! Hugs, Frea

Oh Annika, if you consider this a mess, I would say its a very pretty kind of mess :) Love what you did with the colour pencils...I'm still trying to find the right kind of paper to colour (not that I can colour very well anyway, LOL)

This card is the furthest thing I have ever seen from a "mess" - I love everything about it - I love how you cut out the main image and then matted with black - it really makes it stand out - your coloring is awesome - I have yet to really give prisma pencils a try - I only own about 6 of them - not really enough to experiment with. You do inspire me though to try new things! I will have to get one of the pearl pens though - I love what you do with them on the acetate. That will definately be on my next order. Once again thanks for sharing your amazing talent with us - simply stunning!!!!

I L-O-V-E this image Annika, and it doesn't look a mess to me at all. Fabulous! Card from Tesco?!? Not at mine. :(

Your creation is very great - so wonderful coloring the motiv! I like it!
Thanks for your comment! Laugh - I wanted to crumple up the card in between have and throw it away. It is not as easy as it can be seen in the workshop. Worst of all, I found the triangles.
I look forward to your version. Tell me if it has brought you to despair - laugh
Big hug and have nice weekend

I'll have to look into that paper. I'm doing okay but I wanna take my Prisma's to a new level. This one is fabulous. Love the way those colors blended.

We have a BIG deep fryer for outside. You put a rub mix all over the turkey and then drop it in the oil (slowly) and it fries it for a couple hours. Yummy, best turkey you ever had. We're having winds today though so hubby is kinda worried. Gusts up 50mph. If you ever get the chance to taste a fried turkey - do it!
